Giving advertising a bad name?
Normally, we don't use this blog to poke fun at others, but this spot recently came to our attention, and it created such a firestorm of commentary in the office that we just had to share it. Stone Creek Furniture Elf :60
The spot actually appears on the home page of the company's Web site as well. Wow. Our take: "Worst Ad Ever? Certainly debatable, although the folks at Head-On are working to top this lovely spot from Stone Creek. Normally, you can forgive low budgets. Or you can forgive weak direction. Or the complete lack of a brand message. Midget jokes. The Dr. Evil pinky nonsequitor. It goes on and on. This spot goes whipping past 'so bad, it's good' into 'awkwardly unfunny' before the first quote-unquote joke is ever uttered. We haven't seen special effects as bad as the foamcore elf under the car since Sid and Marty Krofft retired. Anyone else notice they fail to mention why you might want to shop for furniture at Stone Creek, presumably that you can have a piece built to your size and color specs. They did do one thing right, they put it on the web, so there would be a video more upsetting than the hanging dictator out there. Enjoy."

I've read through the blog and had to put in my two cents worth. Anything involving midgets getting thrown around and having a good time is downright hilarious to me. It looks to me that the actor is having fun with the size he was given. My hats off to him for that.
And the original blog comment about Sid and Marty Krofft is so on the money that it's funny. I am still laughing at that one. So true, so true. You have to admit, that's funny and isn't that what this spot was all about?

Wow, thanks for caring enough to write about our spot. We actually produced the spot here within our in-house agency. What gives advertising a bad name are ads that don\'t sell product. Most of the response with the \"elf\" spot has been good even though it\'s \"campy,\" folks are talking about it and sales are up 25% over last year.
The dwarf actor Mark Trombino did a great job for us. Love the Saddam comment.

I shudder to think what they spent to produce this spot.

What about the black face make-up for the elf? Stone Creek really missed the boat on being completely pitiful.
