A great article on blog pitching

I want to share with you an article on blog pitching I found a couple of weeks ago, but did not post a link to at the time. (The page had a massive style sheet error for a while, but appears to be back up and readable. Thanks guys!) The article, "The PR Lessons of a Clueless Blog Pitch," is a mix of best practices (that keep you from being obnoxious) and improving your success rate. There is no escaping the necessity of winning over bloggers in promoting a business these days, given the number of people reading blogs for their daily dose of information. However, blogs are a different beast then tradition print media, television, radio or any former standard in mass communications - whether the bloggers like it or not. There is a great deal of consternation in the blogosphere about pitching, and I can understand why. However, they need topical stories, and we need them for traffic. So it seems like a far more advantageous arrangement to help bloggers by not being overly aggressive, as this article suggests.

I am the Social Media Services Manager for Off Madison Ave. I've been with the company since 2006, when I was hired to do SEO, and link building in particular. When social networking sites started cropping up, at first I started using them to create backlinks - but they weren't the best for that, given all of the "nofollow" attributes. However, I did see the potential for all of the direct referral traffic they represent. Since then I've been actively pursuing both tactics for clients: Links that can help them for search, and social postings that get them involved in the conversation. It's about the coolest job you could ever get. ;)
