Publicity Stunts 2.0
A great article on the Micro Persuasion blog about publicity stunts, and their eventual demise. (The Flat Future of the Publicity Stunt.) All I would add is that online publicity stunts aren't necessarily publicity stunts - the ones that work at least are actually valued content. I mean, say what you want about Subservient Chicken, but it was entertaining content. Harry Houdini escaping from a straight jacket hanging upside down over New York City was entertaining too, but you couldn't e-mail it or book mark it. Maybe you need to tell PR professionals that useful content is a publicity stunt so they'll get it - but it would really be so nice if they just understood the value of value, rather than trying to find anothe sneaky way of diverting people's attention.
