The iPhone cometh...

Well, the date has finally been announced...June 29th. The Apple iPhone will revolutionize the cell market or so say the experts. Of course being an Apple fan myself, I agree. If you doubt the power of this phone/mini communications device just check out the ads and then tell me you don't want one. But there is a marketing aspect to this that no one is talking about.

For years we've heard of advertising content delivered on mobile devices. Sure it's happened a little here and there. But seriously, it's been pretty crappy and it's far from being ubiquitous. The iPhone is going to change all that. Just the delivery alone of internet content to real web browser on a phone is a huge step. There is also the delivery of html email on a true mobile email client. Pair those up with Google maps and you should be able to see the possibilities and that's just the surface. Try ad sponsored SMS text messaging. Or behavioral ad targeting based on searches for that restaurant you happen to be looking for last minute. You can even tie that message to a special discount based on the 800 number that is used by the consumer. The point is that on June 29th a whole new world is going to be opened to marketers. The question is, when are you going to be a part of it?

I agree - the one thing I would add is that phone marketing has already been pretty successful in Europe, if only because they don't drive as much as we do. Hell, they have GPS-enabled phones that can tell them, "There's a great sale in that shop you're walking by right now."

America's Ipod fetish could be enough to tip the scale on phone advertising here as well.

Give your two cents
