E-commerce growth slows - time to sharpen the pencil
As reported by the New York Times, Forrester and Jupiter research have concluded that the growth rate for consumer e-commerce is slowing. This is about as surprising as a Pacman Jones arrest, given growth rates have been in the 25%+ range for several years. There is a finite group of people that will shop online. Some people (most notably Amish and gourmet pretzel addicts) will always prefer to shop in a three-dimensional mall. What is really noteworthy about the leveling off of e-comm growth is that it heralds a new era that has been a long time coming. It's the era of optimization. We've been preaching it for years, but now we're ready for prime-time. Fundamentally, if the size of your audience is flattening or diminishing, it is imperative that you yield more revenue from the audience you do have. This bring to the forefront all the geeky tactics of which we are so proud - Web analytics, multi-variate testing, eye-tracking etc. The future is of e-commerce is going to be about conversion rate and eCRM, and it can't get here soon enough.
