Belated Super Bowl Ads Post

Okay so it’s been a few weeks since the Super Bowl but perhaps the fact that this year’s crop of Super Bowl ads was so underwhelming contributed to my not posting earlier. In the past there have been several ads that really stood out as creative greatness. Recent memorable spots include GM’s “Robot” spot from last year, CareerBuilder’s “monkey” ads from a few years back, and 2000’s EDS “herding cats” ad. This year, not much stood out. My top picks include: The E-Trade talking baby. Although talking babies have been done it was still pretty funny. Doritos – Mouse Trap was well done. I kinda liked CareerBuilder’s “Follow your Heart” ad although it doesn’t compare to the monkey ads. But my favorite ad of the night was Tide’s “Talking Stain” ad. I thought it was irreverent yet still got the message across of what the product could do for the consumer. One could say the reason for sub-par ads is that it’s just a sign of the times - that companies don’t want to spend a lot of money on TV commercials. But in this case, companies did spend a lot of money. Companies that always spend a lot of money and have had great ads in the past like Bud Light and FedEx were present, so where were the good ideas? Are companies playing it safe by not pushing the envelope in fear of offending people post nipple-gate? Are creatives getting lazy when it comes to commercial concepts? Is the Super Bowl a passé place for great ads? So now that the bar has been lowered, I guess I’ll just have to download Apple’s “1984” ad on YouTube again and cross my fingers for better ads next year.
