Shaq Twitters During Halftime
Shaquille O'Neal, a super star on the basketball court and now the web, is making news tonight for sending a tweet to his fans during halftime of the Suns vs. Wizards game. As reported on ESPN.com, Shaq decided to push his luck and reach out to his 372,000 fans during the game, despite Charlie Villanueva of the Bucks doing the same thing the night before and being ripped by his coach.
"I was going to do it and not get in trouble, then brag about not getting in trouble," O'Neal said."
This is the kind of thing Twitter is great for. Shaq uses his Blackberry to update his Twitter status, but you can do that from any phone which can send a text message. And Shaq, unlike many of Twitter's "elite" users, actually responds to his followers there. In fact, visiting Shaq's Twitter Page reveals that the big guy spends most of his time conversing back and forth.
This is a great example of a celebrity using social networking to truly interact. So many people sign up for a Twitter account and then proceed to use it as a push mechanism for self promotion. Its refreshing to see someone like Shaq use it for fun.
