Finding a Job in a Time of COVID-19

To all the recent grads: Congratulations! You made it. These days, you’re probably reminiscing about how far you’ve come, while at the same time wondering where you’re going and how you’re going to find a job.

As coronavirus continues to impact the job market and economy, prioritize your search efforts and prepare to work hard to begin this new chapter of your life. As recent grads ourselves, we’d like to share a few tips to help you stand out from the rest.

Research, research, research.

First thing’s first, spend time researching the companies you dream of working with. Search the company’s website, LinkedIn, Glassdoor and social media channels to get a feel for the culture and what it would be like to work there. LinkedIn is a great tool to connect and see what people are sharing, while monitoring the industry discussion and relevant topics to your job search. This is also an opportunity to inquire about paid internship opportunities, as those are often a catalyst for securing a more long-term position.

Request a (virtual) meet and greet!

While meeting in person is a bit more difficult these days, use technology to your advantage. Ask for a virtual coffee with someone you are hoping to connect with one-on-one. See if the CEO or a top executive has some time to meet and discuss their business and what they are looking for in terms of new talent. The worst that can happen is they say “no,” however it’s more probable that most people will actually say “yes.”

You might be surprised at how much people love sharing what they do and would take you up on your invitation. Listen to their guidance and advice. Use their insights and recommendations to punch up your resume for that next big interview.

Ah, the interview.

The more prepared you can be, the better. Do a deep dive into the company you are interviewing with and the job description. Whether it’s virtual or in person, dress for the position you want and don’t take any shortcuts. This is your one shot to make a great first impression. Bring it!

A few key tips:

·       Be prepared to discuss your resume (bring multiple copies if meeting in person)

·       Use your college experience and volunteer opportunities to showcase your skill set

·       Create a list of questions to ask when you are given the chance

·       Bring a notebook and pen

·       Ask for a clear future. When can you expect to hear back? When are you looking to make a decision?

Set yourself up for success.

Always follow up your interview with a handwritten thank you note. Old school, we know. Have it written before the interview and pop it in the mail after you meet. There are so many digital forms of communication these days that a personalized, handwritten note stands out and you’ll be remembered for your thoughtfulness.

And we should add, don’t just reach out to say thanks. Stay in touch, even if you don’t get the job. Finding a job and growing your career is partly about who you know and staying in front of key members of the industry. Keep in touch with the decision makers you meet along the way because you never know when they may come across an opportunity and think of you.

Bottom line, remain optimistic.

Use the time you have now to your advantage. Take an online course, participate in a free webinar or update your portfolio. Stay focused and prioritize your to-do list each day to continue working toward your goal. Make a point to reach out or connect with someone daily. Grow your network and seek out opportunities. Continue to persevere. Your efforts will not go unnoticed!
